How to Elope
People Also Ask
What is an elopement?
An elopement is an intimate wedding experience where a couple chooses to marry with just the two of them (or a very small group of loved ones) in a meaningful location rather than a traditional venue. Unlike the old definition of “running away to get married,” modern elopements are fully planned, intentional celebrations. Couples choose elopements to prioritize their connection, their chosen setting, and the freedom to create a ceremony that truly reflects who they are — without the pressure of a guest list. From the mountains in Banff to a misty forest in Muskoka, elopements in Canada can be as wild, romantic, or adventurous as the couple themselves.
How do I elope in Ontario?
To legally elope in Ontario, you need three things: a valid marriage licence, a registered officiant, and two witnesses over the age of 18. You and your partner apply for the marriage licence together in person at your local municipal office — no residency requirement means couples from anywhere in Canada or abroad can marry in Ontario. The licence costs approximately $150 and is valid for 90 days from the date of issue. On the day of your elopement, a registered officiant performs the ceremony, and your two witnesses sign the licence. Your photographer can serve as one of the witnesses. Once submitted, you’ll receive your official marriage certificate by mail.
Do I need a permit to elope in Ontario Provincial Parks?
Possibly, reach out the park warden of the park you’re interested in to confirm. Provincial parks generally only require you to pay to enter the park. National parks always require a specific permit. The process is managed through Ontario Parks, and requirements vary by park, so it’s worth checking directly with the specific park you have in mind. If you have a guest count over 10 people you’ll likely need a Special Event Permit, and some parks have designated areas where ceremonies are allowed. Fees are generally reasonable, and the permit process is straightforward once you know which park you’re working with. I’ve helped couples navigate this before and I’m happy to guide you through what’s needed for your chosen location — just mention it when we connect and we’ll sort it out together.
How much does an elopement photographer cost in Ontario?
Elopement photography in Ontario typically ranges from $2,500 to $6,000+ depending on the photographer’s experience, the length of coverage, and whether the location involves travel. Unlike traditional wedding photographers, elopement photographers often take a more active role in the planning process — scouting locations, coordinating timing with golden hour, and helping the day flow naturally. Many packages include 4–8 hours of coverage, a fully edited gallery, and sometimes additional services like film or travel. For destination elopements outside of Southern Ontario, travel fees apply. Investing in an experienced elopement photographer ensures your images reflect the emotion and beauty of the day — not just document it.
Do you need witnesses to elope in Ontario?
Yes — Ontario law requires two witnesses aged 18 or older to be present at your ceremony for the marriage to be legally valid. This is one of the most common surprises couples encounter when planning an elopement. If you want a truly just-the-two-of-you experience, your officiant and photographer can both serve as legal witnesses, keeping your guest count at just four people total. Some couples choose to include one or two close friends or family members to fill this role, turning it into a tiny, intimate celebration. Either way, having witnesses doesn’t mean giving up the privacy or magic of your elopement day.
Can you travel for elopements outside of Canada?
Yes — destination elopements are one of my favourite things to photograph. I’ve worked with couples across Canada and internationally, and I’m available to travel wherever your vision takes you. Whether you’re dreaming of eloping in the Italian Dolomites, on a black sand beach in Iceland, or somewhere closer to home like the Canadian Rockies, I’d love to be there. Destination elopements include a travel fee, which varies depending on location — reach out through my contact page and I’ll put together a custom quote for you.
What is included in your elopement photography packages?
My elopement packages include full-day or half-day coverage (you choose based on how you want to spend the day), a fully edited gallery of high-resolution images delivered through a private online gallery, and a complimentary planning consultation where we talk through your vision, timeline, and location. I also help with location scouting and timing recommendations so we can make the most of the light. Every package comes with personal guidance throughout the planning process — I want you to feel confident and excited, not stressed, on your elopement day.
How far in advance should I book an elopement photographer?
I recommend booking at least 6 to 12 months in advance, especially if you have a specific date or location in mind. Popular elopement seasons in Ontario — particularly fall colour season and summer — book up quickly. That said, if you have a shorter timeline, don’t hesitate to reach out. I occasionally have last-minute availability and I’m always happy to check for you. The sooner we connect, the more time we have to plan something truly special together.
What is the difference between and elopement and a micro wedding?
An elopement typically involves just the couple and a very small number of people (usually under 10), with the emphasis on adventure, location, and personal meaning over formality. A micro wedding follows the structure of a traditional wedding — ceremony, dinner, speeches — but with a scaled-down guest list, usually between 10 and 30 people. Elopements tend to be more flexible in location and schedule, and often unfold over several hours in nature rather than at a traditional venue. If you love the idea of a wild, intimate, photographer-documented adventure more than a seated reception, an elopement is likely the better fit.
Do you photograph elopements in the Blue Mountains?
Absolutely. The Blue Mountains area is one of my favourite places to photograph elopements in Ontario — the escarpment, the surrounding trails, and the mix of seasons make for genuinely stunning images year-round. Whether you’re envisioning a winter elopement with snow-covered trees, a golden fall session, or a summer sunrise on the escarpment, I know the area well and can help you find the perfect spot. The Blue Mountains is part of my local coverage area, so there are no travel fees for sessions in that region.
She truly exceeded our expectations for how we wanted our day and our love to be captured
Marie is an absolutely wonderful photographer to work with. We first met Marie when she was capturing our friends’ wedding in Cabo – we loved her vibe and how she effortlessly captured all the candid moments and the energy of the day. My husband and I had recently gotten engaged at that time and when we saw the photos from that wedding, we knew we wanted her to capture our big day. She is intuitive and creative with her shots, directs and offers feedback on posing, and instinctively knows how to capture the love and joy of a day in such an authentic way. We got married in Tuscany in June 2025 and I look at our photos every single day because they remind me of how incredible our wedding day was and I never want to forget that feeling (and will never have to now!). She truly exceeded our expectations for how we wanted our day and our love to be captured and we are endlessly grateful that she travelled across the world to do so!
